Maina is a trained food scientist from Jommo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He has 25 years of experience in the horticultural & agribusiness industry in Kenya and Africa. Maina is the training director at Food Quality & Safety Services Ltd, which specializes in food safety compliance standards, climate change adaptation & mitigation, and market access. Maina has worked as the Technical Director of Kenya Horticultural Exporters (1977) Ltd, dealing in the export of fresh fruits and vegetables to Europe. He has worked extensively with horticultural export companies, actors in the agribusiness sector, big farms and small-scale growers, corporates, government institutions, county governments, and UN and EU agencies involved in agribusiness value chain activities. The most recent project was the MARK UP project implemented by UNIDO to increase market access and revenue for smallholder farmers for Kenya's horticultural produce and improve the institutional and regulatory framework for better conformity assessment services in Kenya’s horticultural sector
