Webinar Overview

This webinar focuses on handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for soil contaminant screening: sampling, calibration, accuracy, interpretation and when confirmatory laboratory testing is required.

Dr. Ruth Onkangi

Officer

Dr. Ruth Onkangi is an Officer in Construction Research and Business Development at Kenya’s National Construction Authority. Her work connects research, policy and practice to support a safer, healthier and more sustainable built environment. Her research spans environmental chemistry, construction sustainability, indoor environmental quality and human exposure assessment. She completed doctoral studies at Kyushu University, investigating inhalation exposure in indoor environments. Her publications address airborne transmission, environmental management in construction and building performance in Kenya. For this webinar, she brings a research perspective on XRF applications, analytical limitations and the importance of reliable evidence when interpreting soil contaminant screening results.

Dr. Cecilia Wandiga

Executive Director

Dr. Cecilia Wandiga is Executive Director of the Centre for Science and Technology Innovations (CSTI), a UNESCO Associated scientific research trust established in 1998. She specialises in technology transfer, innovation strategy and collaboration between research, industry, government and communities. Her work connects EcoChemistry with sustainable construction, circular materials and investment readiness. Through CSTI’s Time-to-Verify framework, she helps partners identify evidence gaps, strengthen scientific due diligence and improve impact governance. Her focus is translating research into programmes that align technical performance, community priorities and financial viability, supporting informed investment decisions and inclusive transitions toward safer, low carbon and nature positive development.
